Feeding Puppies on the Street: What's Safe for Young Strays

Safe food for street puppies depends on their age. Pups under three to four weeks need a puppy milk replacer, never cow milk. From around four weeks, offer soft, soaked puppy-friendly food like softened biscuits or boiled rice with curd. By eight weeks they can eat softened solid food. Always provide clean water and consult a vet for very young orphans.
Finding a litter of street puppies is heart-melting, but their tiny stomachs are delicate. The wrong food can cause serious diarrhoea, dehydration, and even death. Feeding them correctly, by age, gives these little ones a real chance to grow strong.
How does a puppy's age decide what it can eat?
A street puppy's digestive system matures in stages. Matching food to age is the single most important rule.
- Newborn to 3 weeks: Only milk, ideally from the mother. If orphaned, a proper puppy milk replacer.
- 4 to 6 weeks: Weaning begins. Soft, mushy food alongside milk replacer.
- 6 to 8 weeks: Mostly soft solid food, eaten several times a day.
- 8 weeks and up: Softened solid food and gradually firmer meals.
If you are unsure of a pup's age, look at its teeth and movement. Eyes closed and unable to walk means newborn; wobbling and play-fighting means it is weaning.
What soft foods are safe for weaning puppies?
From about four weeks, puppies start exploring solid food, but it must be soft and easy to digest.
Good options include:
- Plain boiled rice mashed with a little curd
- Boiled and mashed pumpkin or bottle gourd
- Soaked, softened dog biscuits made into a porridge
- Plain khichdi without spices, salt, or onion
Many feeders soak a vegetarian biscuit in warm water until it turns into a soft paste, which weaning pups lap up easily. As the puppies grow, you can soak them less so they learn to chew firmer food.
Foods to never give young pups
- Spicy, oily, or salty human leftovers
- Onion, garlic, chocolate, and sugary sweets
- Cow or buffalo milk (more on this below)
- Bones that can splinter
Should you give street puppies milk?
This is the most common mistake feeders make. Plain cow milk often causes painful diarrhoea in puppies.
Most pups cannot digest the lactose in cow milk well, so it ferments in their gut. For orphaned newborns, use a proper puppy milk replacer formula instead, available at vet clinics and pet stores.
Because this myth is so widespread and so harmful, we have written a full explainer on whether street puppies can drink cow milk. It is worth reading before you pour out that bowl.
How do you feed orphaned street puppies?
Orphaned newborns need round-the-clock care and ideally a vet's guidance, but here are the basics.
- Keep them warm. Tiny pups cannot regulate temperature. Use a soft cloth and a gentle warm-water bottle wrapped in a towel.
- Feed milk replacer with a pet feeding bottle or syringe, never by pouring it down the throat, which causes choking.
- Feed little and often, every two to three hours for the youngest pups.
- Help them toilet. Very young pups need gentle stimulation of the belly and rear with a warm damp cloth after feeding, as their mother would do by licking.
If at all possible, try to reunite pups with their mother or a lactating street dog, as natural milk is always best. A vet can guide you on fostering and timing.
How often and how much should you feed street puppies?
Puppies have small stomachs and big energy needs, so frequent small meals beat one large meal.
- 4 to 6 weeks: Four to five small soft meals a day.
- 6 to 12 weeks: Three to four meals a day.
- Older pups: Two to three meals a day.
Always keep clean drinking water nearby, especially in hot Indian summers when dehydration sets in fast. Watch that bigger or pushier pups do not eat everything, leaving the smallest ones hungry.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can street puppies eat biscuits?
From around four weeks, biscuits should be soaked into a soft mush. By eight to ten weeks, pups can usually nibble lightly softened biscuits. Younger than four weeks, they need only milk.
Can I feed street puppies roti?
Plain soft roti soaked in a little curd can be given in small amounts to older weaning pups, but it is low in nutrition on its own. Soft, balanced puppy food is better for growth.
What if a puppy refuses to eat?
A pup that will not eat, seems weak, or has ongoing diarrhoea needs a vet urgently. Young pups dehydrate quickly, so do not wait and watch for long.
